Beatrice had to have a leg amputated after she was hit by a car.
MADISON, AL (WAFF) -
Beatrice is somewhat of a miracle story. Her foster mom Terry Duke says before The Madison Animal Rescue Foundation better known as MARF, found the dog, she was probably on her own for a long time. In fact, the organization received dozens of calls and emails for months about a dog they'd seen roaming around Madison.
"They had seen a dog up and down Wall Triana that kind of looked like Benji from the movies," says Duke.
When they finally tracked Beatrice down, she was in bad shape. She'd been hit by a car, and even had to have her leg amputated. But once she had her surgery, her health got better.
The next step would be rehabilitating the dog and getting her adopted...and that's where Terry Duke comes in. MARF called on the foster mom for help. You see Beatrice just couldn't go to any foster home, she needed a patient caregiver that would work with her.
Duke has nursed Beatrice back to health, and now the former stray gets around just fine.
Duke believes her pediatric nursing background has helped in being a short term foster for dogs like Beatrice.
"When that baby cries you don't know what they need. You don't know if they're hungry, or if they're wet, or if they're just cranky and just want to be held," said Duke.
Thanks to her hard work, Beatrice will be ready for a new home in just a couple of weeks.
If you're interested in adopting Beatrice or one of the other animals at MARF just go to their Website at http://www.madisonarf.org/.
If you can't adopt, but would like to help, MARF is having a fundraiser called Pints for Paws, Saturday, August 17th. Tickets are $25 and money goes to rehabilitate and care for dogs like Beatrice. It's at Blue Pant Brewery on 500 Lanier Road from 6-10pm. The ticket includes food, unlimited beer samples, entertainment, a silent auction, and giveaways.
