Royals playoff fever spreading throughout Kansas City

Posted: Updated:

The boys in blue have been red hot the last two weeks until Saturday night.

The Royals lost for just the fifth time in 22 games since the All-Star break and have one more game against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, and this time, a win will mean much more to the team.

Now at 60-54 and 8.5 games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers, the Royals remain 4.5 games behind the Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League wild-card standings.

It was standing room only at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday night.  The game was the club's first sellout in August since 2003.

"It's exciting for Kansas City finally to be excited to actually sell out. Normally they're just giving away tickets, so it is fun," Royals fan Christine Trewhitt said.

The parking lot was jammed, and the fans were pumped.

"The crowd, the atmosphere, the town is behind this team," Royals fan Jeff Johnson said.

The Royals have not been in the playoffs since they won the World Series in 1985.  The last time the team finished with a winning record was in 2003.

The bandwagon is getting pretty full right about now.

"It just seems like it's actually good baseball again," Dave Wallace said.

But of course there are die-hands too.

"I just want the Royals roster to know that I have been supporting you for the whole time, but I am very happy that there are so many people supporting you now too," Lindsay Ripley said.

The Royals have 48 games left in the regular season.  They have 11 games left with Detroit and six games left against the second-place Cleveland Indians.

So with hats off to the boys in blue, fans are looking forward all the way to the end.

"I'm the biggest Royals fan there is and we're gonna win it all this year," Johnson said.
