Human remains found at KC downtown airport

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are investigating after human remains were found at the Wheeler Downtown Airport.

For the past several weeks, construction crews have been doing some extensive work to taxiway G on the east side of the airport, parallel to runway one.

They've been tearing up the taxiway to lay new drainage pipes. The work was going smoothly until about 5 p.m. Monday, when workers reportedly spotted what looked like human remains.

Police came down and quickly confirmed the human skeleton.

They don't know if it is a man or woman, but they are saying it appears those remains have been buried there for quite some time.

There hasn't been any major work to the taxiway in years, and considering the airport was built in 1927, it is very possible the remains may have been buried for decades.

Detectives are working the scene as a death investigation, and it will take numerous hours or even days to recover the remains in their entirety.

Police said there are still a lot of unanswered questions as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
