BLUE SPRINGS, MO (KCTV) -

A 28-year-old Independence man died Monday after a car lift fell on him at Blue Springs automotive shop. Police have identified him as Gusteno A. Santamaria of Independence.

Authorities were called to Highline Auto Shop, located at 609 SW Highway 7, about 11 a.m. on a medical call.

When crews arrived, they found Santamaria, who died from injuries he sustained when a four-post vehicle lift tipped over and fell on him while he and other employees were in the process of moving it.

Blue Springs police are investigating it as an accident right now.

Most of the lifts are dead bolted to the ground and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating.

"I know it's substantial. It's the four-post lift that cars drive on and lifts the car up and I know it's extremely heavy," said Blue Springs police Detective Jeremy Dickstein.

Some of Santamaria's family arrived at the auto shop throughout the day, but were obviously very distraught. They and friends spent the afternoon offering comfort to one another.

The shop employees did not want to speak to the media on camera.
