More than 1,000 backpacks stuffed, ready to give to students in need

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Back-to-school shopping can be a financial burden, but people spent Saturday morning simplifying what is often a stressful situation for many families.

One thousand backpacks were packed and ready for the new school year.

"We believe strongly in kids and education. This seems like the ideal way to help out," said Dee Pack, the president of Cargo Largo.

This is the fourth year of the Cargo for Kids Backpack Stuffing Drive. It's become a yearlong tradition.

Cargo Largo collects donations from customers, suppliers and employees. Every August, with the help of several hundred volunteers, all those donations get stuffed into 1,000 backpacks.

"It's a lot of work, but I enjoy watching the day happen," said Cargo for Kids Coordinator Kelly Seiter.

For a homeless student heading back to school, a single backpack can go a long way.

"The backpacks are so important because when a student walks into school and we realize the situation they're in - many times when they've lost housing, they've lost lots of other things in their life, including school supplies," said Director of Family Services for the Independence School District John Tramel.

Seiter has been the woman in charge of all Cargo for Kids drives. She said she volunteers every year because the mission is so important, but the growth of the program is bittersweet.

"Unfortunately it's (the need) still growing. I think it's not just here, it's many communities, but we're able to make an impact," she said.

From the Cargo Largo building at East 35th Street and Noland Road, the 1,000 or so backpacks get shipped to the Independence School District to be passed out.
