Man accused of recording people in dressing rooms

Posted: Updated:

There's a disturbing story for anyone who has bought clothing in Lawrence, KS. A man is now accused of using a camera to spy on people in dressing rooms.

Authorities said the camera was used in a remote, used to automatically open a car door. Police said the man targeted clothing stores, mostly in downtown.

"I think it's disgusting," Megan Plumb said.

It's the general consensus around Lawrence, when the subject of Orion Graf comes up. Graf, a KU grad student getting his PhD in anthropology and former teaching assistant, is charged with 10 counts of breach of privacy, accused of secretly recording people as they undressed.

Police confirm some of the cameras were placed inside dressing rooms at downtown clothing stores.

"It's a desperate attempt to get attention. For me personally, right away I thought if there were little girls in there too, it's so inappropriate and very violating," Abby Fraizer said.

Prosecutors allege the crimes happened between November 2012 through February 2013, when Graf was first arrested. Police said they launched an investigation at that time, uncovering many more instances, where recording devices were used.

Graf was arrested on Sunday at his Lawrence home.

"Knowing they could go into a dressing room and put cameras in there. I worked in retail before, and you would think they'd go through the dressing rooms, as they're cleaning up clothes, and they would be able to see cameras," Fraizer said.

But authorities said the cameras were inside a keyless entry remote, something that had to be placed and then picked up. So far, prosecutors have been able to identify three victims, but the process is continuing.

There's no word on how many people were caught, and captured in a state of undress.

"They might not ever know, and I almost think I just wouldn't want to know," Plumb said.

Graf will be back in court on Aug. 5.
