Chase ends with suspect ditching car, running on foot

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The chase of a suspected carjacker ended, when he ditched his allegedly stolen car and took off on foot.

The suspect sped through roadways around Worlds of Fun, did at least one U-turn and drove against traffic, before getting out of the red car he was driving, near Interstate 435 and Highway 24.

Chopper 5 video shows the suspect exit onto Winner Road, leave the roadway and jump out of the vehicle. He began running across a large expanse of the interchange. Right away police cars were on his tail, and a K9 dog took the suspect down.

The right two lanes of I-435 southbound at Highway 24 were temporarily closed, as police cleared the incident. All lanes of the I-435 to Winner Road off-ramp were also closed, but reopened about 6 p.m.

Police said the chase began when an officer on patrol saw a carjacking in progress, at Bannister and Hillcrest roads, shortly before 4 p.m. The suspected carjacker, seeing the officer, took off.

Police said two suspects were taken into custody, the one who ran off, and a second person, who remained in the car. Officers found at least one gun at the scene.
