MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Marine police are investigating a freak boating accident that killed a Limestone County man.

The incident happened on the Tennessee River, a few miles north of Decatur during a fishing tournament. Alabama River Police and the Morgan County Rescue Squad responded to the scene at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur, Tuesday evening.

According to investigators, the victim was a passenger on a bass boat that ran into low power lines at a high speed.

Authorities said the victim was Anthony Szozda, 65, from Limestone County. He was taking part in the fishing tournament at the time of the accident. The driver of the boat was not hurt.

These power lines had been low for several days while utility crews worked on them. The Morgan County Rescue Squad said warnings were going out to shipping boats, but sport fishermen would not have received them.

Tennessee Valley Authority has confirmed it owns those lines. A statement from the TVA said:

"Tuesday's accident was an unusual and unfortunate occurrence. Our thoughts go out to the family of the boater who was killed. We are taking this very seriously and are working closely with the authorities to understand the facts around this event. TVA exercises all appropriate caution when we do our work at all times. The safety of the public, our employees and our partners is our top priority."

TVA officials are in the area Wednesday investigating the accident.
