THETFORD TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -
Genesee County authorities now confirm that two people were killed after a house exploded in Thetford Township in the 3000 block of East Vienna Road.
Crews on the scene tell TV5's Andrew Keller two people, who had been unaccounted for earlier, have been found. They are believed to be the home's owners. They've been identified as Dave and Sue Miller.
One person was taken the hospital following the explosion. The home was completely destroyed by the blast.
"The east and west walls were blown out from the explosion. We knew there were three people who were supposedly in the house, we were able to get one out of the house," said Thetford Township police Chief Bob Kenny.
The explosion happened at about 1:50 Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators say a piece of construction equipment, possibly a backhoe, hit a gas line and caused the blast. On Wednesday, investigators hope to talk to the survivor who remains in the hospital Tuesday night to gain what knowledge he has to help them piece together exactly what happened.
"Try to determine exactly where the gas came from that caused the explosion," said Clio Area fire Chief Gary Domerese.
Keller's report in the video player above contains further details in this story.
On Wednesday, the Thetford Township Police chief said Consumers Energy and state investigators were back at the location to continue to probe the incident.
