Mother and infant remain hospitalized after being hit by car Saturday

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

20-year-old Audrey Hettinger remained in critical condition Sunday, after she and her two-week-old infant were hit by a car in Tyler.

Hettinger is at a Tyler hospital, while her baby was taken to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. The infant’s condition is not known at this time.

Authorities said just after 8 P.M. Saturday, Hettinger was trying to cross Old Bullard Rd. with her baby, when she was hit by a black four-door Mercedes Benz sedan.

Sergeant Paul Robeson with the Tyler Police Department said Hettinger and her two-week-old female infant were lying in the street when authorities arrived at the scene.

“The mother appeared to be in very serious condition,  and the baby appeared to be in serious condition as well,” Robeson said. “The baby was crying and moving.”

The crash happened right in front of an outdoor anniversary party and barbeque for a local clothing store. Sgt. Robeson said two officers were working on an extra duty job in a nearby parking lot and immediately responded to the scene.

Witnesses told police that Hettinger tried to cross the street at a location that did not have a crosswalk. They also said that the crash happened when it was still light out and both parties should have been able to see each other coming.

While police said alcohol is not a factor in the accident, they did take the driver’s cell phone and are investigating whether or not texting or other distractions could have played a role in the crash.

According to Hettinger’s Facebook page, she currently studies engineering at UT Tyler, after graduating high school in 2012 in Seguin.

Sgt. Robeson has identified the driver of that vehicle as 40-year-old Angela Minick. Robeson said Minick did not suffer any injuries from the accident, and there is no indication of alcohol use by either Minick or Hettinger.

Tyler Fire Department, Tyler Police Accident Investigators, and Major Crimes Investigators responded to the scene as well. At this time, the case remains under investigations and no charges have been filed.
