Ariel Castro appeared much different during his plea deal hearing
Ariel Castro reaching a plea deal for life in prison.
Ariel Castro has hung his head during every appearance in court.
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
From the moment he walked into the courtroom it was noticeable. His demeanor had changed.
He was wearing his eye glasses that his lawyers requested he be given, he looked around the courtroom and when seated, sat upright.
Even his answers to the judge's questions were different from what we are used to hearing. His speech was clear and concise, not mumbled as before.
He was asked all the usual questions at a plea. Did he understand the rights he is giving up, did he know if he was giving up any right to appeal and most importantly did he know he would never be leaving prison.
Among the charges Castro plead guilty to are a murder charge for ending the pregnancy of Michelle Knight sometime between Christmas of 2006 and the following May.
Twice Castro referred to his sexual problems, even an addiction to pornography.
Castro seemed to object to the characterization of him as a violent sexual predator, and said he believed there were more than $22,000 in assets that he would forfeit along with his house which Prosecutor Timothy McGinty said would be searched for valuables and torn down very soon.
Just what brought on the drastic change in Castro's demeanor is probably a topic that many will discuss but it seems that his agreeing to life in prison may have played a role.
