Social media has brought hundreds to volunteer for the search for Chad Rogers, a father who went missing following a run Monday night. More >
The heartbroken father of missing runner Chad Rogers said he knows his son is now in heaven after his body was apparently found Friday.
"Our family is heartbroken at the loss of our son, brother, husband and father," a weeping Greg Rogers said. "We loved Chad and will always love him. Even though our hearts are sad, we know he is with his father in heaven."
Tim Fritson, who has been closely involved in the search for Chad Rogers, said Liberty police have notified the family that they believe his body was found Friday.
The body was apparently found in a portable toilet set up on South Valley Junior High School, which is at 800 Midjay Dr. The school is near construction of a flyover on Interstate 35.
The search has been called off.
Liberty police said this is a difficult time, but no positive identification has occurred. An autopsy will be performed, and police asked for patience.
The investigation continues, police said.
Chad Rogers was last seen Monday night when he left for a run. His family has organized massive searches for him and many have volunteered after seeing the pleas through social media. Police thanked the community for the outpouring of support that led to hundreds of volunteer searchers.
Chad Rogers, his wife and 1-year-old son have been living with his parents in their Liberty home. The three moved to Liberty after Chad Rogers lost his job as a youth pastor at a church in Jefferson City.
Greg Rogers had been the public face of the search for his son. He had said on Thursday he wanted to be able to look through God's eyes to see where his son was. He said they got that answer on Friday even though it wasn't the one the family wanted.
"Thankfully, we can now send him home," Greg Rogers said.
During his remarks, he thanked all of those who had wrapped their arms around the family and supported them. The gratitude included the searchers and those restaurants, grocery stores and others that donated food and beverages for the searchers and police officers.
About 1 p.m., a grieving Fritson shared the news on the Facebook page created to bring Chad Rogers home.
"Friends, it is with a very heavy heart that I communicate that the Liberty Police Department has tentatively located the body of Chad Rogers. The cause is not known at this time. The search has been called off," he wrote. "Please give the family space over the next few days as they process through the difficulty of this time. In the coming days there will be information regarding contributing financially toward the family. We will post when we have that information. Thank you for your search efforts over the last 4 days. You've been very helpful throughout the process."
A trust fund has been set up for donations, which can be made to the Chad Rogers Memorial Fund, care of U.S. Bank, 1909 W. Kansas St., Liberty, MO 64068.
