KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
At least three people were injured after a gunman fired on a Kansas City bus Thursday.
At least one shot was fired by a gunman outside the bus. A passenger on the bus was struck in the hand by a bullet, according to officials with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority.
Two others were injured when they were struck by glass fragments. All three are expected to be OK.
It occurred just about noon at 31st Street and Prospect Avenue.
Police questioned numerous people. Two men and two boys were taken into custody. They were found at a home on East 32nd Street.
The following day, the Office of the Juvenile Officer filed charges in the shooting.
A 16-year-old youth is charged with first-degree assault, which is a Class B felony, second-degree assault, which is a Class C felony, and two counts of armed criminal action. The youth is being held at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center.
Avia Ramsey heard just one shot.
"She was telling us, 'Get down, get down!'" Ramsey recalled.
Dessaray Carr was upset by the incident.
"I feel 100 percent unsafe," Carr said.
A fight started on the bus, and spilled outside, where someone pulled a gun and fired through the window.
It has been a rough year for ATA bus drivers and passengers, with several violent incidents occurring.
Mark Huffer, ATA's director, said riding the bus is safe.
"We do everything we can to make it as safe as possible," he said. "In spite of the fact that this is the second time in a week or so, it's very unusual to see this kind of thing."
He said the violence is a reflection of society as a whole. The bus company is looking at ways to improve safety, but say metal detectors aren't feasible.
Cameras are on board buses. Drivers are trained on reacting in dangerous situations.
"She did exactly what was needed to be done," Huffer said about the driver. "She pulled the bus over, called dispatch and they dispatched police right away."
