A couple died after their car slammed into a semi on southbound Interstate 49 in Grandview, authorities say.
John E. Miller, 68, and his wife, Barbara A. Miller, 64, weren't wearing seatbelts, Grandview police said.
The crash happened just north of Harry Truman Drive about 7:10 a.m. Thursday. This is a stretch of highway between Blue Ridge Boulevard and Main Street.
Police said the man entered the highway when his vehicle struck the right side of the semi. The car spun underneath the trailer.
"The car came out from under the trailer, after hitting the guard rail," according to a news release from Grandview police.
Sgt. Ryan Sharp of the Grandview Police Department said the semi dragged the car for some distance.
Both the husband and the wife, who lived in south Kansas City, died at the scene.
The Millers didn't have insurance and now their family is struggling to cover their funeral expenses. In order to help, Hope of Glory Ministries Church of God in Christ has a memorial fund set up in the couple's honor. People are asked to make contributions payable to Hope of Glory Ministries and memo Miller Fund acct# 214547-01.
Contributions may be mailed to Mazuma Credit Union, 9300 Troost Ave, Kansas City, MO 64131.
Shortly after 9 a.m. one lane of southbound I-49 was reopened to traffic. A second lane was reopened about 11 a.m., leaving just one lane closed.
All lanes were reopened by 3 p.m. Thursday.
Traffic was backed up significantly, and some drivers resorted to using the driveways of businesses.
