Ottawa father arrested after toddler found wandering in street

Posted: Updated:

An Ottawa father is in jail after his 2-year-old son was found wandering the streets.

Police went door-to-door looking for the parents of the little boy Wednesday after he walked away from his house near Fifth and Sycamore streets.

A neighbor saw the child, called 911 and stayed with him until police arrived. Police said the father is under arrest.

Jerry Farrar was one of the neighbors police spoke with.

"[The] officer said 'I got a picture of him on my phone,' and I said 'Let me get my glasses on' and I said right then and there 'he lives next door,'" Farrar said.

Police said the boy's father was not home when his son went missing, but his roommate was, although he was asleep.

The 2-year old boy and his 6-month-old brother, who was also in the house at the time, are in protective custody.

"It is a pretty quiet neighborhood and there never seems to be any problem. Kind of a shock, I guess," neighbor Bryan Mille said,

Neighbors said this isn't the first time the suspect's son was seen walking around alone.

Farrar reported a similar incident to police about a month ago. He said the father has only lived here about three months.

"I vaguely know him, and of course, he ain't talking to me since I turned him in the first time. I figured I'd do what was right," Farrar said,

The boy's father is in the Franklin County Detention Center facing a charge of endangering a child. A court date hasn't been set.

KCTV5 is not releasing the father's name because he hasn't been formally charged yet.
