Counterfeit cash turns up at Murfreesboro businesses

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Murfreesboro police say they've seen a large spike in a specific type of crime in recent weeks, and it involves your wallet. Now, the Secret Service is involved in helping catch the people behind the scheme.

Counterfeit cash has turned up at several businesses in the past 10 days.

"In the last week, I'd say we've seen 15 to 20 bills being passed to local businesses," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.

Police say it's pretty rare to have this much counterfeit money show up at once.

"While it's not certain the number of suspects we have in this case, we will send these to the Secret Service that will do forensics, examine each of the bills and will know how each of the bills were made," Evans said.

At a quick glance, the bills look pretty real, but Evans notes the bills are missing security water marks.

"The security water marks, and the security strips would certainly not be in these," Evans said. "If you look at the quality of the print, the trees, you can't see their branches. It's just smudge. The 'United States of America' isn't clear."

Small details are easily missed, if you don't take the time to look, and for every fake dollar a business takes in, it's a real dollar lost.

As the counterfeiter remains on the run, police have a warning for anyone handling hard cash.

"It's important you take the extra time to check the security features, and keep yourself from becoming a victim and then call us immediately," Evans said.

Police say if you notice anything wrong with a bill, you should call police and keep the customer, who used the money in the store.

Even if the cash didn't originate with that customer, they could help police track down where it came from.
