A Murfreesboro police officer and his wife are accused of trying to trade a television for prescription hydrocodone pills, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Officer Andrew Messick, 43, and Crystal Messick, 44, were arrested Monday night and charged with one count of simple possession and casual exchange of a controlled substance.

TBI agents said they received information about the couple wanting to exchange the television for the pills in a Walgreens parking lot on Memorial Boulevard.

The exchange was made and the couple was arrested, booked into the Rutherford County Jail and released on $2,000 bond.

Andrew Messick comes from a family of law enforcement officers. His grandfather was a former Murfreesboro police chief, and his father was an assistant chief.

"The Murfreesboro Police Department is aware of the arrest of Officer Messick by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.

Andrew Messick's police powers have been taken away - meaning he had to turn in his gun, badge and police credentials.

"Currently, Officer Messick is on decommissioned status, meaning he has no police authority," Evans said.

Andrew Messick has been with the department since Sept. 20, 2010, and he was assigned to the uniformed patrol division.

Channel 4 News took a look at Andrew Messick's personnel file and found he came highly recommended by several local judges and was formerly a court officer.

He received a one-day suspension for causing a traffic crash with his patrol car and a letter of reprimand after he was involved in another crash.

He was commended by his supervisor for helping a female juvenile who held a knife to her throat attempting to commit suicide.

For now, Andrew Messick's future employment with the department has not been decided. He's still on the payroll and hasn't officially been suspended.

"We do take this seriously and will begin our internal process immediately," Evans said.

Attempts to contact Andrew and Crystal Messick were not returned Tuesday.
