Carol Brooks, the rock behind former Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Brooks, died Sunday after a battling cancer for some time.
Carol Brooks was 78 years old. Alvin Brooks, a former police officer and crime fighter, always considered his beloved wife his better half.
She was surrounded by her loved ones when she died before midnight Sunday, according to a statement from Councilman Jermaine Reed.
The couple had six children and were married for 63 years.
Brooks was a pillar of strength for her family and supported her husband's efforts, even though they meant he was often away from his own family. She helped create the anti-crime fighting organization in 1979 in the response to the murders of nine women.
When her husband ran for mayor in 2007, Carol Brooks said Hillary Clinton was a political wife she admired. She spoke about how she would continue to support her family while tackling causes that were near to her heart.
Service arrangements are pending. Cards may be mailed to the Brooks Family, P.O. Box 414523, Kansas City, MO 64108. Condolences may also be shared on the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime's website at www.adhocgroupkc.com.
