Carol Brooks, the rock behind former Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Brooks, died Sunday after a battling cancer for some time.
Carol Brooks was 78 years old. Alvin Brooks, a former police officer and crime fighter, always considered his beloved wife his better half.
She was surrounded by her loved ones when she died before midnight Sunday, according to a statement from Councilman Jermaine Reed.

Brooks was a pillar of strength for her family and supported her husband's efforts, even though they meant he was often away from his own family. She helped create the anti-crime fighting organization in 1979 in the response to the murders of nine women.
When her husband ran for mayor in 2007, Carol Brooks said Hillary Clinton was a political wife she admired. She spoke about how she would continue to support her family while tackling causes that were near to her heart.
