Dangerous monsoon makes mess of Apache Junction

Posted: Updated:
APACHE JUNCTION, AZ (CBS5) -

A few minutes of rain forced three water rescues and multiple road closures in a central valley city Sunday afternoon.

As water levels rose above two feet in some areas, Apache Junction Firefighters say they conducted three water rescues from the city's many wash areas, designated drainage for rain water.

"What I saw [Sunday] was complete and utter destruction," Apache Junction resident, Jeff Herring said. "[More than] what we've ever seen before."

After the storm, Herring drove across one of those wash areas. With less water, the roads and sidewalks are now caked with mud.

"People's front yards were washes," Herring said. "Completely, just devastated."

Firefighters say no homes suffered any significant flooding inside. Many of the homes near wash areas in the city are built on high ground or are elevated.

Norm Hoeper surveyed the damages to his mobile home park off Tomahawk Road.

"It just made a mess out of the park," Hoeper said.

The water receded but the flash-flood left behind bushes, cacti, even a lawnmower caked in thick mud.

The city immediately jumped into action, calling on bulldozers to clear the roads of the mud, acting like snowplows to push piles of mud to the side of the road.

"They're going to be really busy with the maintenance people," Herring said. "That's for sure."

Several storm drains are now clogged with debris. Herring, like his neighbors, hopes the monsoon he witnessed Sunday is the last of it for now. He says any more water could've been a nightmare.
