SUFFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

A gruesome discovery was made by teenagers at a popular hiking area in Suffield - a body was found sealed in a duffel bag Friday afternoon.

Teenagers made the discovery in the area of Quarry Road around 2 p.m. after smelling a rotting odor, police said. A man's body was dropped about 25 yards off the trail that police believe had been there for two or three days.

The body, which was wrapped in a black plastic bag and placed in a large duffel bag, was slightly decomposed, police said.

"It's a slightly decomposed body," said Suffield Police Chief Mike Manzi. "With the heat and the weather, I do not have the ability to make that determination at this time."

Police are aggressively trying to find out how it got here and the identity of the victim. The names and numbers of everyone who passes through are being taken as this investigation continues.

Suffield Police said the body appears to be that of while male between 25 to 30 years old. The body has been taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's office in Farmington for an autopsy.

Connecticut State Police Major Crimes is assisting Suffield police in their investigation, along with police from Massachusetts as the body was discovered not too far from the state line.

"I couldn't elaborate on the injuries. It's hard to tell," Manzi said. "It's wrapped up in a black garbage bag and that was placed into a blue canvas duffel bag."

Police told Eyewitness News that they don't believe the homicide did not take place in the area of Suffield.

The trail is a popular one, especially amongst kids, so police believe someone may have seen something.

If anyone has any information or may have seen something, they are asked to call the Suffield Police Department at 860-668-3870.
