Tucson kidnap-murder trial ends in a mistrial

Posted: Updated:

The trial of a man accused of kidnapping and first-degree murder in Tucson has ended in a mistrial.

Jurors in Pima County Superior Court said they were unable to reach a decision Wednesday in Manuel Ignacio Mendivil-Martinez's trial.

A conference was scheduled next month to discuss a second trial.

Mendivil-Martinez was accused of participating in the November 2010 kidnapping and killing of Walter Puerta-Garcia.

The Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/12Kmd7R) says Puerta-Garcia was bound with duct tape, shot four times in the face and his body torched to hide evidence. His body was found days later near Tucson International Airport.

Prosecutors say Mendivil-Martinez took part in the killing with two other men because they worked for a Mexico-based drug lord who was at war with a rival who was Puerta-Garcia's brother.
