A boater discovered a body in the Kansas River Wednesday morning.

About 10 a.m. Lawrence police and Douglas County deputies responded to Burcham Park about a possible body in the river. Upon arrival they spoke with a boater who said he discovered a body in the river just to the northwest of the Kansas University Boat House.

The sheriff's office called out their Underwater Search and Recovery Team to assist in the investigation and to recover the body.

A news release from the sheriff's office said preliminary investigation indicates the body is that of an adult Caucasian male. The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Dwight Sexton of the Lawrence area.

The sheriff's office said a preliminary medical examination found no signs of foul play and an autopsy will be performed Thursday.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the Lawrence Police Department are investigating the incident.
