A water main break in West Hartford Tuesday morning caused pipes to turn dry during the middle of a heat wave, but service was restored by the afternoon.

West Hartford police said a 6-inch main broke in the area of 65 Oakwood Ave. at about 9 a.m.

Throughout the day, 100 residents went without water in one of the hottest weeks so far this year.

"I just want to drink to water," said resident Daniel Pereria, who was helping his father with yard work when the water main break happened. "I just want to take a shower."

With temperatures in the 90s on Tuesday, a water wagon was brought in to supply the affected residents with water.

The arrival of water allowed resident Rich DeMaio to fill his buckets to flush his toilet and Pereria to get a much-needed drink of water.

Water service was turned back on by 4 p.m.

Residents said that this is the second water main break they have dealt with since December and they told Eyewitness News they are demanding action from Metropolitan District Commission.

DeMaio said he has been "waiting for years to get the water line replaced."

The MDC told Eyewitness News that plans for a long-term solution for this neighborhood have already been made. They have planned to replace both the water and sewer mains, so the Oakwood Avenue Project will start in 2014.

The commission said the break could have been caused by the soil conditions beneath the ground
