Columbia cold murder case has police seeking new tips

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV-AP) -

An unsolved murder can weigh heavily on the family involved, but imagine two cold cases. Authorities in Columbia are asking for the public's help in the investigations.

George Barrett Dugger died Aug. 27, 2008, and an investigation found he had been fatally stabbed.

Dugger's body was found in his burning home. A medical examiner found Dugger - known to his family and friends as "J.J." - had not inhaled soot or smoke, meaning he was dead before the fire was set.

"I'm fairly certain someone knows who the killer is, and we want that person to come forward," said Lt. Joey Gideon, with the Criminal Investigations Division.

More than two years later, the body of Dugger's uncle, George Foster, was found shot several times in the front seat of his car. That killing has not been solved, either.

Foster had lived with Dugger at the time he died and was one of the last people to see him alive.

"I can't tell you the same person killed both people, but it's definitely of investigative interest to us," Gideon said.

One possibility police delved into: did Dugger know he would soon die? He'd purchased two grave plots at a cemetery in the weeks before his death.

"He had bought those on an opportunist basis. The graveyard had actually run a special on those, a real low price, and that's when he bought those," Gideon said.

Tips should be phoned to the Maury County Sheriff's Detective Division at (931) 375-8693.
