Family members on the scene have identified the victim as Raymond Thomas, a father of three children under the age of 10.
Police said the suspects pulled up outside the Thomas' house on 94th Terrace near Lamar Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
A devastated family wants answers that Overland Park detectives are working to provide after a man was gunned down while picking up his son for an afternoon of fun.
"They took a great brother, father, uncle and cousin. They took someone really special and important," Kei-Lisah Thomas, the victim's sister, said Monday. "I just don't understand. I don't understand why it happened."
Raymon Thomas had come to his ex-girlfriend's home to pick up his 8-year-old son, Thomas' mother told KCTV5. The two had planned to spend the afternoon and evening at Worlds of Fun.
As Raymon Thomas arrived at the home on 94th Terrace near Lamar Avenue, one of two men inside a red or maroon-colored Ford Taurus with Missouri plates opened fire. This occurred about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Police said Raymon Thomas was hit several times by the gunfire.
It was a devastating blow to his family, trying to make sense of who would want to kill him.
"Why would you do this to him, why would you do this to him? Because he helped everybody and anybody," the shooting victim's aunt, Ella Thomas, said.
His aunt said the 33-year-old father of three young children just helped his sister pay for college and got his own real estate license.
"It is real hard, and it is especially hard for his mother. They were real close," she said.
Police are interviewing witnesses hoping to determine a motive for the killing.
"We were inside just doing some things in the house and all of a sudden we heard this series of really loud shots, I mean pops, and to me my first thought was, 'My gosh that sounds like a gun,'" neighbor Brenda White said.
Neighbors are worried about where the gunmen are now.
"You're concerned that they may try to escape, or show up in your yard or something, so I think everybody's pretty much in shock," White said.
Witnesses described the shooter as a heavyset black man with a shaved head or very short hair. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
There is no word yet on the motive, but police say right now it appears to have been a targeted shooting rather than a random drive-by.
"A lot of questions that we're asking witnesses, family members to try to find out what spurred this," Overland Park police spokesman Officer Gary Mason said.
He said Monday that police have numerous leads they are working to track down.
While the family, too, is looking for answers and wondering how to move forward from tragedy.
"It is going to be hard, whatever happens, whatever they do, it is going to be hard," Ella Thomas said.
Kei-Lisha Thomas just wants to know why someone would kill her only brother.
"He wasn't bothering anybody. He just wanted to take his son out for a day of fun, which is something he always did," he said.
Raymon Thomas' father died in a car crash when he was a youngster. His daughter, Angel Thomas, said her father wanted his children to have what he never had.
"He wanted to give us stuff he didn't have when he was a kid. He didn't have a Daddy so he wanted us to have one," she said. "I just want whoever did this to know that I hope their heart is heavy with regret because they took something from us we can never get back."
