Leawood camp offers theatre fun for kids with special needs

LEAWOOD, KS (KCTV) -

Summer camp is a right of passage and can often be an expensive one.

That is why the Jewish Community Center is making it possible for those who are financially left behind.

About 35 children are participating in a weekend theatre camp offered for children with special needs.  They are performing in a Disney medley and the idea is to give everyone a chance to be a star on stage.

"Everybody is just having so much fun, and that is a really nice thing to have," camper Kane Marker said.

Variety has partnered with Stage Right Productions to create activities that the children can participate in on stage.

"Singing songs, dancing, being with kids just like them and have a love for the stage and performance," board member Justine Green said.

Variety is an international, volunteer-driven organization with 53 active chapters worldwide committed to bettering the quality of life for special needs children.

The show is free and open to the public and starts at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Community Center in Leawood.
