Independence police recover stolen car with sleeping children inside

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

It was a terrifying night for a metro mother after she left her two children in her car while checking into an Independence motel.

Police received a 911 call shortly after midnight Sunday that a woman was checking into America's Best Value Inn, near South Noland Road and East 43rd Terrace, and had her car stolen while she was inside the motel.

She had left her two children, both under the age 11, sleeping inside the car with the car keys in the vehicle.

Independence police quickly alerted all area police departments and contacted the Missouri Highway Patrol to initiate an Amber Alert.

However, about 45 minutes after the vehicle was taken, Independence police received a phone call from the Kansas City, MO, Police Department notifying them that the stolen vehicle had been located near Truman Road and Interstate 435.

The two children were still sleeping inside the car. The children were unharmed, and they were quickly reunited with their mother.

Officers believe the person that stole the car was the one who called them to tell them where it was.  The investigation is ongoing.

If anyone has any information about the incident or the suspect, please call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or the Independence police at 816-836-3600.
