Authorities have recovered the body of a missing fisherman in the Kansas River.
The body was found about 12:45 p.m. Monday on a sandbar just east of Interstate 435. Police confirmed Monday night that the body was that of a missing man.
Investigators said the 30-year-old man last was seen about 7 p.m. Saturday near the bridge. He was out fishing with friends when he decided to jump in and try swimming to the other side.
Midway across the river, authorities said he went under and never came back up.
Signs around the river warn of a strong current in the water.
There were quite a few people down by the river Saturday night. The daughter of one of the man's friends explained what she and her family saw.
"He just jumped in the water. He wanted to cross to the other side, but we don't know why," Carla Perez said.
Friends said the man lives in Kansas City but most of his family is in Chicago. They said he does not have children of his own.
A co-worker said they worked construction together and that he loved to play soccer.
