Man cons bank teller out of money

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are looking for a man who conned an Overland Park bank teller.

Police won't say publicly how much money the man snagged, but he used an age-old trick at the UMB Bank at 80th Street and Metcalf Avenue.

However, it's typically less experienced clerks at retail stores who are conned, not bank tellers.

"Whatever they can do to get someone flustered they are going to try and accomplish," said Overland Park police Officer Michelle Koos. "What they really are quick-change scammers. They may be referred to as quick-change artists, but the reality is they are thieves."

The thief asked for change, but during the process said he wanted to convert the cash to foreign currency. The man had left the scene before the mistake was caught.

"This is the kind of person that has perfected their thieving trick. They look for the person that might be easy to confuse," Koos said.

And the clerk conned was relatively new to the bank. Detectives are aggressively working to catch the scammer. If you have any information, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

"If they can pick a target out of this situation, it's going to be a problem if we don't get them caught," Koos said.
