The Missouri and Kansas departments of transportations have announced major construction projects that will create traffic headaches for those who drive on Interstate 35.
The $40 million I-35 widening project west of downtown means the 12th Street Bridge and ramps over I-35 on the west side of the downtown loop will close Friday night. The bridge will be removed and replaced, which will result in the area being closed for two months.
To allow crews to demolish the bridge and remove debris, I-35 on the west side of the downtown loop will be closed over the weekend from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
Drivers will detour to eastbound Interstate 670 then north on Interstate 70 to the east side of the loop.
This will force drivers accessing the West Bottoms to find alternative routes and will be in effect until early September. The project will cost an estimated $1.5 million.
Some businesses say they are concerned about falling sales during construction, but believe the finished product will help the area.
In addition, the Kansas Department of Transportation warns motorists should expect significant delays on I-35 in and around Olathe this weekend.
All lanes of southbound I-35 from 119th Street to Santa Fe Drive will be closed to allow for the hanging of overhead signs. This will occur between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Saturday and last up to 30 minutes.
All lanes of northbound I-35 at Gardner Road will be closed for sign installation for up to 30 minutes Saturday morning. This will occur between 8 a.m. and noon.
Southbound I-35 from 119th Street to Santa Fe Drive will be reduced to one lane from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday. Northbound I-35 from Gardner Road to Moonlight Road will be reduced to one lane between 8 a.m. and noon Saturday.
Drivers are told to expect major delays.
