Car crashes into Groton restaurant

Posted: Updated:

A motor vehicle crashed into a restaurant  in Groton Friday afternoon, and just missed the establishment's owner.

Witnesses said a late-model Cadillac jumped the curb, and plowed into Beirut Restaurant in the Groton Shopper Plaza on Long Hill Road.

Emergency officials said the driver, who they only described as elderly, crashed through the plate glass front of restaurant, and was brought to a local hospital as a precaution.

The owner of the restaurant, Dina Matar, told Eyewitness News that he missed getting hit by one meter, just minutes after her last customer left.

"Thank God because a customer just left five minutes ago," Matar said.

Matar said she saw the lady and she was "fine." She added she even offered her a glass of water.

The owner of the plaza, Jerry Olsen, said there was a similar crash in the plaza about two years ago.

"Just hit the pedal, jumped the front wall and that was it," Olsen said. "Didn't do as much damage as this."

A building inspector determined the facility is structurally sound to remain open, however they will have to board up the hole.

Emergency crews secured the building, which allowed other neighboring businesses to continue operating.

"We put a hose line as a protection line in case a fire occurred, because of fuel inside the building," said Groton Fire Chief Todd Paige. "We are trying to secure the building for structural problems and utilities."

The incident remains under investigation, according to police.
