Witnesses: 'It was a miracle' cyclist survived crash

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Witnesses said it's a miracle a Portland cyclist is alive after a car ran over him and dragged him 30 feet.

Friends said Dave Collins had extensive skin graft surgery Thursday for injuries he sustained when he was hit by a car making an illegal turn off N. Fremont Street onto Borthwick Street.

"His body could have been crushed by a wheel," said Collins' friend, Matthew Cruz. "He is incredibly lucky to be alive."

Pictures from the scene show Collins' bike completely mangled by the car. Police say the driver was given a citation for making an illegal left turn.

Collins was not wearing a helmet at the time.

His employer, PDX Pedicab, is donating all ticket sales of their Brewery Experience Sales during Oregon Beer Fest to Collins' medical bills. They are also planning a benefit party.
