Motorcycle rider dies in crash into Portland apartment

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A speeding motorcycle rider failed to make a turn and struck a curb, causing the motorcycle to go airborne and slam into an apartment, police said Thursday.

Police said the 34-year-old motorcyclist on a 2007 Kawasaki ZX6 died at the scene of the crash on Milwaukie Avenue just south of McLoughlin Boulevard.

Investigators said he was driving at a high rate of speed before the crash, and one neighbor heard him go by.

"(He) passed my window, he was still going full throttle," said Rachelle Menashe, who tried to help the motorcycle rider. "A split second later, I heard the crash."

After hitting the curb, the motorcycle went 100 feet, hit the upper portion of a first-floor apartment, ricocheted and crashed into a parked car.

Menashe and other neighbors rushed to help the victim and they found him in nearby bushes. They tried to revive the man, but were unable.

There were two people inside the apartment at the time of the crash, but they were not hurt. There was considerable damage to the apartment.

Police shut down Milwaukie Avenue on Thursday morning so investigators could look into the 2:42 a.m. crash.

It's not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash. The Oregon State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy today and send blood samples for a toxicology test.

The fatal wreck is the 23rd traffic death in Portland in 2013, and the fourth in the last seven days.
