PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police shot and killed a man they say pointed a gun at two officers during a chase early Thursday morning.

Luis Alberto Flores, 31, and a woman approached an apartment near 29th Avenue and Camelback Road, pulled a gun and demanded to talk to someone they believed was inside, Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said.

Police said when the person who answered the door told Flores they didn't know what he was talking about, Flores became violent and pulled out a gun. One of the tenants called police and gave a description of the suspects.

Officers found Flores riding a bike near 26th Avenue and south of Camelback Road and chased him to a gated condominium complex, where they said he aimed the gun at two officers, who immediately fired and wounded him, Crump said.

While on the ground, Flores again pointed his gun at the officers, and one of them fired a second time, Crump said.

Flores died at the hospital, Crump said.

During the investigation, neighbors told police that earlier in the evening they saw two people with rifles going in and out of a condominium near where the suspect was shot. Crump said officers found about a dozen people inside and were questioning them.

Crump said it wasn't known if the woman who was with the man was among the people found in the unit.

He said police recovered a handgun and what is believed to be narcotic, and they were serving a search warrant on the residence.

Neither officer, one a 32-year-old, five-year veteran of the force, and the other, a 27-year-old, six-year veteran, were injured, Crump said.

Flores was released from the Department of Corrections on June 4 after serving a two-year sentence for drugs charges and auto theft, Crump said.

He also had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest, Crump said.
