KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Seven children and two adults were in single-vehicle wreck that caused major backup along Interstate 435 in South Kansas City.

The wreck was reported in the westbound lanes of I-435 between U.S. Highway 71 and Holmes Road.

Officials said the black Explorer was westbound when it lost control and flipped. Chopper5 video showed the SUV after it landed off the road and in an embankment.

Several children were ejected and were seen being treated in the grass by medical personnel.

Officials said several people, one of whom is a child, were seriously injured in the wreck.

I-435 in both directions was moving very slowly and traffic didn't start moving as normal until shortly before 8 p.m.

Officials are looking into the possibility that a tire blowout caused the wreck. They also said there were only five seats in the SUV and a total of nine people crammed inside.
