Memorial at site of hotshots' death to open

Posted: Updated:

The site where 19 Prescott Hotshots were killed will be visible from a new overlook that will be open to the public once the highway through Yarnell re-opens.

Drivers who stop at the site alongside Highway 89 near Yarnell will be able to see a flagpole in the distance that marks the site where the Granite Mountain Hotshots were trapped by a fire on June 30.

Officials shuttled family members and visiting Hotshot crews to the site on Tuesday. The Arizona Department of Transportation is scheduled to re-open Highway 89 at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The fire is 90 percent contained but fire activity has essentially ended. Fire spokeswoman Bonnie Strawser says crews are working to make sure smoldering embers around the town of Yarnell don't ignite a home.
