With a heat advisory in effect, it's not a day to be without air conditioning, but there are some people at a Northland apartment complex who are dealing with that exact problem.
"The A/C doesn't work. There's leaks on floors and ceilings," resident Stephanie Mitchell said.
There is a laundry list of problems at the Englewood Apartments, and residents said it's gone from depressing to dangerous.
"Water is leaking from the pipe down and it turns into mold," another resident, Tashema Akins, said.
"Electrical problems, like the light switch. When you click one of them on, it sounds like it's popping in the back," said yet another resident, Shaniqua Johnson.
At the apartments on Northwest Waukomis Drive, it seems everywhere you turn there's a problem.
From mold to broken windows, plumbing problems, even gas leaks, residents said they have filed complaints.
"We've tried contacting HUD [the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development], we've tried contacting the management team, we've tried finding out the owner's name," Johnson said.
But there's been no help.
Some problems like Johnson's broken window, which a winter storm blew out seven months ago, is frustrating but she's been patient. With temperatures soaring and air conditioners out in several apartments, she now said her patience is shot and some said it's now a dangerous situation.
"My concern is my kid with asthma and he can't be in this type of situation," Akins said.
Akins has a letter from Children's Mercy Hospital insisting her son have basic utilities and still she has seen no change.
"We are suffering. It's hot outside. I don't have anywhere else to go," she said.
Local management for the apartments referred KCTV5 to corporate, who didn't answer any questions either.
In the meantime, residents with no other options said the problems keep piling up.
"You don't know what you are going to get at Englewood," Johnson said.
The apartments are a part of Section 8 housing. The local HUD office sent KCTV5 to their state office. No one at the state office was available to address the concerns.
