KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A 17-month-old baby was among the 17 patients treated at the University of Kansas hospital for fireworks-related injuries.

The hospital's burn unit is busy at Fourth of July. From Wednesday through midday Friday, they saw six of the 17 patients admitted to the burn unit.

The baby was the youngest patient while the oldest was in his or her early 40s.

"We prepare for this time every year," said Kayla Northrop, nurse educator in the burn unit. "Unfortunately, we see injuries from fireworks of all kinds, including bottle rockets, M-80s, smoke bombs and sparklers."

In 2011, the hospital treated 30 patients over a five-day period. In 2012, that number was 38.

In both 2011 and 2012, most of the patients were adults in their 20s but several of those injured were toddlers.
