Debbie Hassed, Grand Slam money winner
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
It was a very exciting day for the Royals Thursday. The team came back from five runs down to beat the Indians, but for one lifelong Royals fan, this year's Fourth of July will be one she never forgets.
"I remember turning to my son Nate and saying, ‘at least they are making this exciting for me,'" Debbie Hassed said.
While it hasn't happened in 10 seasons for the Royals, Thursday it was like a Fourth of July miracle for the Overland Park woman.
"My husband's like, ‘they are going to throw them the meatball, going to throw him a meatball," Hassed said as she thought back to watching the afternoon game.
Her fireworks came early when Royals slugger Lorenzo Cain hammered a grand slam in the 6th inning. Not only did it get the Royals back in the game, but it also got Hassed $25,000.
"My husband's like, ‘I think he's got it' and sure enough it went over the fence. From there my son said I went completely nuts and crazy," she said.
Hassed had signed up for the Sonic Slam contest in May. Her name was chosen, and Thursday with Cain's grand slam, she cashed in big time.
Not only did Hassed win $25,000, she actually got an extra hundred. The following batter George Kottaras hit a solo home run, bringing her total to $25,100.
"A lot of people have done recommendations on what to do with the money, but I think I'm going to sit on it for a while, and find a really good use for it," she said.
As for Cain, he was happy to help out. He offered a beaming smile and some advice.
"Congrats on winning the Sonic Grand Slam award, spend that money wisely," he said to her.
Former Royal Matt Stairs had hit the last Sonic Grand Slam back in 2004.
