Hampden County's top prosecutor is seeking a judgeship.
According to our media partner Masslive and The Republican, Mark Mastroianni is applying for a federal judgeship after two years into his term as Hampden County District Attorney.
Mastroianni said numerous state judgeships have come and gone but he cannot pass up on this particular opportunity. The judgeship opened up after U.S. District Judge Michael Ponsor went into semi-retirement in 2011.
In the selection process, a search committee created by a U.S. Senator must pick three candidates. One name is then forwarded on to the president.
Mastroianni does have plans to seek re-election if his bid for the judgeship is unsuccessful. He is up for reelection in 2014.
