Severe storms with large hail, damaging wind possible Thursday

FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the entire metro until 4 p.m.

Thunderstorms that developed in Nebraska are moving southeast and will be impacting northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri on Thursday morning into the afternoon.

Storms have a history of producing frequent lightning, heavy rain, softball size hail and damaging winds.

"As these storms move into more unstable air, they will likely continue to strengthen as they approach the metro," KCTV5 meteorologist Hallie Shulman said.

More storms are possible in the afternoon to evening hours.

Large hail, gusty winds, heavy rainfall and lightning are the main threats with any thunderstorms that develop.

"The tornado threat is not zero, but it is pretty small. The slightly higher tornado threat is south and west of our area," Shulman said.

Storms should move out Friday morning, leaving sunshine through the afternoon and slightly cooler temperatures.

By the weekend, expect only a small chance of storms and cooler air with highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s in the afternoon.
