City puts thousands of pieces of land up for sale at discount

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A new plan by Kansas City, MO, to breathe new life into neighborhoods is now underway and it involves putting thousands of pieces of land up for sale at a discount.

The Land Bank of Kansas City, MO, is offering big discounts for over 3,600 properties up for sale. The properties fall under the city's land bank program. It includes 743 foreclosed properties and more than 2,800 abandoned and blighted properties.

The state Legislature authorized the land bank last summer.

There are stipulations on the sales. It's not meant for developers to come through and scoop up a bunch of properties. This is primarily for homeowners who live next to the properties listed because they can buy the properties under certain situations.

Vacant lots under 2,500-square-feet can be bought up for $1, up to 6,000-square-feet for $75 and up to 6,500-square-feet for a max of $480.

"It gets rid of the eyesore, it's kind of a win-win situation. They get the property, the neighborhood gets a blighting influence removed and the land bank doesn't have to pay for the cost of mowing and keeping it cleaned either," said David Park, the executive director of Land Bank of Kansas City.

Go to kcmolandbank.com to search the city's database of homes and submit an application. You can search by specific address, zip code or even neighborhood.
