Family, friends remember Lenexa teen killed on I-35

Friends and family gathered to remember a Lenexa teen killed while crossing Interstate 35 during the weekend.

Many of those who attended Tuesday night's vigil at Shawnee Mission West High School for 13-year-old Ezkial Crapo were still in shock from his sudden and tragic death Saturday.

His best friend, David Reed, said the outpouring of support is a testimony to the type of person Ezkial was.

"I just kind of broke down crying in my room. And then I went over that night. I still just can't believe it. It's hard to even understand it," Reed said.

Ezkial died after being hit by a car on I-35 near 75th Street. Police said he was headed to Walmart with some friends, one of whom darted into traffic and made it safely across the interstate.

On Tuesday, his friends remembered Ezkial as an outgoing, music and sports-loving teen.

"It doesn't matter what class level, how cool you are, geeky, whatever you are, you're still a friend to him," Davon Brown said.

The crowd of more than 100 sang Amazing Grace and released balloons in Ezkial's memory as his father praised his late son.

"The 13 years that I had with him, I would do it over and over again because he was a kid that truly made me proud every day," Daniel Crapo said.

Ezkial's funeral will be held Saturday at the church of Latter-day Saints in Lenexa.
