Kansas City clown class teaches more than circus skills

Posted: Updated:

The art of clowning appeals to all ages. Now there is a class to give their inner clown some class.

Beth Byrd-Lonski has been a clown her whole life. Since 2005, she has been teaching circus skills and clowning at City in Motion.

"If the audience finds something funny, no matter how uncomfortable you are, go with it. Do it more than once," she laughs.

When people walk into her class and see the students learning how to slap and kick each other, that doesn't mean they don't get along.

"We are supportive of each other in a loving way," she said. "Everybody is always just so happy."

Adam Austin is enjoying his time as a student and as a performer. He said this class is teaching him more than circus skills.

"This class is not just about clowning. It is all about improving your career," Austin said.

But not all students end up on stage. However, Byrd-Lonski said that doesn't mean they don't use what they've learned

"They go ahead and utilize it to have fun in their own family," she said.

With classes every Tuesday. There is a lot people can learn about clowning around and sometimes too much.

Class runs from 8-9 p.m. Tuesday, and they do accept walk-in students.
