LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -
A 13-year-old Lenexa boy is dead after he was hit by a truck while trying to cross Interstate 35 with friends.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says Ezkial Crapo died in the accident Saturday night.
Officers say Ezkial and two friends had gone to a Walmart and were trying to return to an Overland Park home when he was struck.
The boys made it across the northbound lanes and over a concrete median when Ezkial was hit by a truck.
The driver stopped and is cooperating with authorities.
"I don't know what they were going for, what they were after. All I know is it wasn't worth it," said Ezkial's mother Jessica Halford Crapo.
Ezkial's parents say they don't know exactly why he was crossing the interstate, but they say those unanswered questions are making his death that much harder.
"He didn't make many mistakes. Honestly. It's a shame this one had to be his last one," said Ezkial's father Daniel Crapo.
Ezkial's parents made funeral arrangements Monday for their son.
Troops says this a good time to remind everyone how dangerous walking on the interstate can be.
"With highway speeds, it is hard for people to determine how fast the vehicle is approaching them. It is illegal for pedestrians to be on the interstate. That is one of the reasons it is illegal, because it is so dangerous," said Lt. Paul Behm.
Investigators believe Ezkial may have been taking a shortcut instead of walking to the 75th or 87th street overpass.
"Don't take the shortcut, it's not worth the risk," Behm said.
The Crapo's say their son knew how dangerous cars could be.
"Just watching, being on the highway watching the cars zip by. Common sense tells you this is dangerous," Ezkial's mother said.
But they say the outpouring of support from his friends and classmates shows the impression he left on everyone he knew.
"He was out there being the man we wanted him to be. I was lucky to have a kid most would die to have. It's a shame it was cut this short. But I'll take the 13 years that I have now, because it was a joy to have him," said Ezkial's father Daniel Crapo.
A candlelight vigil is set for 8 p.m. Tuesday at Shawnee Mission West High School.
There will also be a benefit car wash at 11732 Blue Ridge Blvd. in Kansas City, MO, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
