Man charged in MU student's kidnapping caught

CALDWELL COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

A man charged with kidnapping a University of Missouri student has been captured after eluding officers for several days.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office announced Friday that 23-year-old Brian Adkison of Columbia was caught while authorities were investigating a residential burglary call. He is jailed in Morgan County. His attorney didn't immediately respond to an email or phone call.

He is charged in Caldwell County with kidnapping his ex-girlfriend, inflicting injury and terrorizing her before dropping her off at a Columbia hospital Sunday morning. He also is charged in Boone County with first-degree burglary, rape and deviate sexual assault.

The search has involved a helicopter, more than 50 officers and dogs. Authorities also conducted door-to-door searches.

Lt. Mike Nienhuis says Adkison stole several boats before he was caught.

Adkison is accused of kidnapping his former girlfriend while she was walking her dog near her parents' home last week. A felony charge has been filed.

The victim's family says they are grateful that the 23-year-old woman was able to get away and get to a hospital in Columbia. They said they feared that she would be killed by her former boyfriend.

The victim's family says their daughter dated Adkison, but they broke up two years ago. They said he has been stalking her ever since.

Court records indicate that Adkison was accused of raping the same woman last month.

Adkison was arrested and charged with rape, burglary and deviate sexual assault for allegedly breaking into the woman's apartment May 4.

The woman got an order of protection three days later. Bond was set at $50,000, which the man made. He was ordered not to have any contact with the victim or go to her home.

In the wake of the weekend's accusations, a judge on Sunday set a cash-only bond of $500,000 on the May charges.

In August, Adkison was arrested on a case involving a stolen vehicle. According to court records obtained by KCTV5 on Monday, Adkison was found in a stolen vehicle at Harrah's Casino on Aug. 6.

He denied the allegations. When he was arrested, authorities said he had $7,200 cash in his wallet and $15,000 in casino chips.

A bond reduction hearing was held in Clay County on Friday. According to court documents, the Clay County judge also ordered Adkison not to have contact with the woman or her family in the rape case. In addition, Adkison was to get electronic monitoring and be on house arrest within 48 hours.

Except authorities say less than 48 hours later he would grab the woman while she was walking her dog, which did make it back home safely.

The family said the woman is doing well all things considered and is recovering from her injuries.

Editor's Note: This story initially incorrectly reported that Adkison sexually assaulted the woman over the weekend.
