INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

The Jackson County animal shelter is seeking new homes for dozens of animals taken from the home of an Oak Grove woman.

The woman, who has cancer, was no longer able to care for the animals, so she turned them over. The family is being evicted on Friday.

Altogether, 23 cats, 15 kittens and four dogs were taken in.

Joe Hinkle of the Great Plains SPCA said the animals had fresh food and water when they arrived to the house.

"The people were taking as good of care of them as they could," Hinkle said.

The shelter is evaluating the animals and will make sure they have their vaccinations before they are placed for adoption.

The shelter is at 21001 E. Highway 78 in Independence.
