Montgomery Zoo man eats hissing cockroach on live TV

Posted: Updated:

Live talk shows are always a tad bit unpredictable - but when you throw WSFA 12 News' Judd Davis, Montgomery Zoo representatives, and hissing bugs together on camera - things get taken to the next level.

Zoo representatives Sarah McKemey and Wayne Brantley brought some friends, a group of about a dozen Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, with them to talk about summer camps offered by the Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum.

These "hissers" are featured during the Zoo's "Bug Day." Children are given the chance to meet and learn about these bugs - the largest species of roaches.

As seen on air, Brantley says these cockroaches have roughly three to four times the amount of protein in them than the same amount of beef or pork.

Then, Brantley does the totally unexpected - he pops one of the bugs in his mouth and takes a bite. This act totally stuns both Judd and McKemey - and the unseen, but heard, floor crew.

"I usually eat them with some hot sauce for the summer campers," said Brantley.

The Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches do "hiss" when they are disturbed.

"They're not actually hissing from their mouths," explained Brantley. "They're hissing from their rear ends. They actually have these little holes called "spiracles" and they squeeze air through them…"

"Just like us!" said Judd.

"Yeah, so you guys can make a noise with your rear ends and so can they." said Brantley.

The Montgomery Zoo has a couple hundred of these cockroaches on site - but that number is two less today since Brantley ate a second one shortly after the show broke away for a commercial break.

If you feel up for a snack (not really - they won't let you eat them) or fancy a visit to the Montgomery Zoo, make sure to check out their summer camps for kids. And don't forget, dads get in free on Father's Day.
