A 13-year old boy is dead following a violent single-car crash Wednesday night.

The wreck happened about 9 p.m. at the intersection of East 27th Street and Elmwood Avenue on the city's east side.

The driver of a black Ford Mustang lost control of his car and slammed into a power pole.

The driver was the 20-year-old older brother of the 13-year old boy, who was a passenger in the car.

Both were injured and taken to the hospital, but the boy died at the hospital overnight.

Speed may have been a factor in the crash, police said. The brother says that was not the case.

KCP&L crews were out early Thursday morning repairing the power pole that was knocked down during the accident.

The initial police estimates are that the driver was going at least 40 mph in a 35-mile zone. The two brothers were coming home from Bible study when the crash occurred.
