MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Two people were killed and six others were hurt in a nine-vehicle pileup early Thursday morning on Interstate 24 East.

The crash occurred near South Church Street in Murfreesboro around midnight, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The deceased were identified as Brandon Wilson, 28, of Lawrenceburg, IN, and Deja Morris, 25, of West Harrison, IN.

According to investigators, some of the vehicles involved in the crash were headed to Bonnaroo. The two occupants who were killed were traveling to Bonnaroo, according to a witness traveling with them.

THP said eight vehicles were stopped or slowing in the roadway due to traffic ahead when a semi, operated by H & O Transport of Campbellsville, KY, attempted to brake but could not stop in time and began colliding into the other vehicles.

The semi overturned and continued traveling on its side, still impacting the other eight vehicles - which included another tractor-trailer with Werner Enterprises of Omaha, NE.

Two of the vehicles became trapped under the two tractor-trailers and burst into flames, trapping people inside their vehicles.

Deputies responding to the scene were able to pull two people out of one car but couldn't get to the others in time.

"They got their fire extinguishers out. The trooper and the sheriff's deputy were able to get that fire put out and rescue those two victims," said Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold.

Three people who were hurt had to be taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. One other was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt.

At 10 a.m., one person was in surgery, one person was in stable condition and two were treated and released.

By 10:45 a.m., all three lanes of I-24 East were open.

The at-fault truck driver, 40-year-old Stacey Colvin, of Campbellsville, KY, has been cited for failure to exercise due care. Additional charges are pending at this time. No one has been arrested.

Colvin had a previous misdemeanor citation in Alabama on his driving record, said THP.
